Font issues in InDesign

Wow! What a week it's been.

I just wanted to post the solution to our Bengali font (using Vrinda).

Basically, our problem was this: Text from our translation company came through in Microsoft Word. All the Bengali was in Vrinda and looked great. We copied this from Word and, after making sure the text box in InDesign was set to Vrinda font, we Pasted it in... Nice...

 Except...................

 Mmmm

Turn head to one side and squint.

Nope...

Something's up. That font has not copied across correctly.

So, this consumed a very long time of trying different fonts, different machines, Mac, PC, InDesign4, InDesign 5.5. What on earth is going on? There are no Errors. No font messages. No inkling that anything is up, but it most certainly is 100% not correct. : -(

It turns out that Adobe InDesign can't handle non-western fonts.

Wrong !.... Actually, it turns out that Adobe InDesign is more than capable of handling non-western fonts. The functionality is just all 'hidden'.

So, here's a post to the full information that we eventually found: http://www.thomasphinney.com/2009/01/adobe-world-ready-composer/

However, it's a long one... so, here's the quick version.

  1. Adobe InDesign can run scripting
  2. Download these additional scripts you need : http://www.thomasphinney.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/r2l_scripts_for_id_cs4.zip
  3. Extract the scripts
  4. Pop them in the following locations (depending on your computer)
    • Windows XP or Vista: C:\\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\Scripts\Scripts Panel (Note: If you’re on a 64-bit Windows system, that would be “Program Files (x86)” instead of just “Program Files.”)
    • Mac: Hard Drive/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS4/Scripts/Scripts Panel
  5. Re-open InDesign
  6. The scripts then show up in your Window>Utilities>Scripts pop-out

Now, when you have pasted your Vrinda text from Word into your InDesign text area (also set to Vrinda), select the text and then rightclick the script "World-Ready Paragraph Composer" and choose "Run".

Magically, your crazy messed up Vrinda text becomes nice and beautifully exactly the same as the Word content.

You can also buy a plugin that is nice GUI to the scripts at: http://in-tools.com/products/plugins/world-tools/

But we didn't end up using it.

Job done... we hope to have save you a pile of time.
